Ok english speakers... I just saw something on Facebook that bothered me and now I'm checking.

Chic is always pronounced like sheik right? Never Chik.... Because there is a group out there called Running Chics and that seems very incorrect to me when I know that they mean Running Chicks.

Am I to narrow minded?

Maybe they're just going for the double meaning. Or maybe they're making a comparison to them and sheiks--like, they're the rulers of running or whatever.

Maybe it's a double meaning? But it bugs me too, because I would only ever pronounce it "sheik".

It just bothers me. But, I probably won't ever have to look at it again. If it's a double meaning than they need a better saying. =)

I... would pronounce sheik to rhyme with shake, and chic to rhyme with sleek and chick to..., well. Just chick. But yes, it is a totally different pronunciation! I suspect they are just going for the double meaning, like they ^^ said. But it irks, nonetheless.

See, I always pronounce Sheik to rhyme with Sleek. But that maybe totally incorrect so maybe I shouldn't be throwing stones. =)

No, you're not overreacting. I genuinely believe these people are not going for any sort of double meaning and are simply stupid.

This belief is based in my experience of people calling female friends "chica" online, and then somehow morphing that to assume "chic" was how you spelled "chick" when you were referring to a woman.

We are all (or, at least, our language is) doomed!

I agree with you. I think they just don't know how to spell what they mean. My high school English teacher would be appalled.
